Poes over bros

And Now the Screaming Starts posts about The New Yorker's recent ruminations regarding one Edgar Allan Poe. And various fictional ones spawned thereafter.

Meanwhile, downstream from Richmond, there's skulduggery on the James.

Kinda an ub' thing again, but it seems not once but twice that one mandated Jamestown Ferry security dude or another (perhaps lacking the masonry skills to wall folks up in wine cellars) tried to poison a coworker.

Not cool . . .

In case it all reads like something penned by a lesser Poe, here's the text from the Smithfield Times:

Instead it’s been the security guards themselves that have committed the most serious offenses.
In 2004, a security guard put cleaning solution in a co-workers drink in an attempt at poisoning, according to media reports.
A second case occurred in 2006, when another security guard put hand sanitizer in a co-workers drink.
Both guards were arrested and charged with attempting to poison, a felony.

Evidently, when offered the milk of human kindness, one should run a tox screen.

where the grazing is good

Tho' the whole cows and country deal is more of an uberkayness thing, ub' is wearing a bit of a black armband these days.

So here's some bucolic decay. The architecture's cool (and should be preserved, ideally), but I'm here to see & hear the cows convene.

Feel free to stay a spell for whatever reason.

framed by ruination

The ending scene of Andrei Tarkovsky's film, Nostalghia (courtesy lauraemarmor).

I doubt a spoiler alert is really necessary, tho' seeing the movie might lend meaning & context to the beauty being viewed.

vanishing point

A few dispatches from Afton Mountain, an old tourist stop near Skyline Drive:

Recent images of the abandoned HoJo's.

Earlier images of the abandoned Skyline Parkway Motel (now demolished) and the HoJo's.

And oh, yeah, even more recent images.

(Kind of an uberkayness thing as well, so simu-posting there . . .)

born on the fourth

unterkayness yet slumbers, yawns, turns over in bed, and talks in its sleep:

hmmm, it's the fourth . . . go visit the spirit of 17.76 and this bicentennial minute is brought to you by

yeah, yeah, over at uberkayness

and no fireworks, but plenty of lighter fluid and paper

sure, you're welcome

enduring and not so much

FABULON goes crazy on the voice and presence of Ann Wilson of Heart with two cool performance videos, one from back in the day and one recent. To the Wilson sisters and all that sail with them: Barracuda, indeed.

Having gone through a lot of old family stuff lately, I can appreciate Swapatorium's post of a cool old IBM ribbon box as well as the backstory.

With the many photos of funky retail items recently posted on uberkayness, I have to mention BrandlandUSA's latest post, When Will Richmond Bring Back Miller & Rhoads? M&R and its rival Thalheimer's were once the big stores in downtown Richmond long time ago.

the flotsam that jets 'em

Before unterkayness goes into suspended animation:

uberkayness has yet more of various odd arcane stuff being posted.

Swapatorium has two great items up, Deltashine and Miss Fluffy.

FABULON
has two cool clips, Music to Watch the Girls Go By and Drop That Name ("Lassie!").

On Generator.x, this clip bent my brain in a good way. It brought to mind an image seen here on The Woodring Monitor.

And while no doubt biased, I have to mention the painterly mad science of this.

Nodding off now, preparing for deep space . . .

groundhog & WeaslThrum

WeaslThrum on audiokayness: yr garden variety pinging, spronging, buzzing, humming in 4/4 time.

groundhog!!! on uberkayness: goofy grayed out pics of the indomitable Chucky, now arisen from her winter torpor. Skunk cabbage and something resembling warmth to follow for sure.

between, throughout & amongst

In lieu of stylistic or thematic coherence, strings of prepositions do my bidding on uberkayness:

out up & over--black & white & grey all over pics of barnyard and backstreet past, Taunton River recent

inside & out--light of hand and statuary

one minute tops

Boot Sale Sounds just put up a selection from the 1980 LP Miniatures, a cool collection of tracks each lasting no longer than one minute. It was put together by Morgan Fisher who got folks like The Residents, Robert Wyatt and Fred Frith to contribute. Check it out, fer sure.

I've mentioned somewhere before the one minute vacations at quiet american. These are one minute field recordings submitted by folks all over.

(Way longer than one minute are my own field recordings . . .)

on uberkayness--pixels aplenty

Seeing the neat stuff on Flickr, I've had the perhaps unfortunate impulse to upload some pics of my own.

dawn8Jan08-7679

As part of my experimentation with worldwide media hegemony (wheeeee!), much of this has been posted on uberkayness:

just starting to dawn on me

to Flickr into view

all yawns great & small

also the unFlickr-ing one frosty morning

If you like photos of dawn or snow or cats, you're prob. safe. Otherwise, check back later . . .
